We don’t want Ronaldo! Atlético Madrid fans have made their opinion clear
A few years ago, no one would have believed this situation. Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave his current club, but no other club wants to take him on. The situation is even so desperate that the Portuguese’s agent Jorge Mendes is in talks with Madrid’s rivals. Atlético fans, however, do not want their long-hated rival in the team.
The internet has been full of it in recent weeks. Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t want to stay at Manchester United, for one simple reason. That’s because the Red Devils won’t play in the Champions League next season, Ronaldo’s beloved competition in which he holds nearly every record.
And to play only the B-grade Europa League? Not an option for the top goalscorer in football history. So agent Mendes has cast the nets to lure his biggest star to a club with the hallmark of the Champions League.
Options? Bayern, Chelsea and, surprisingly, Atlético Madrid. Real Madrid’s city rival, where Cristiano spent nine years, won everything they could and rewrote all club records. Most importantly, he destroyed the life of Atlético Madrid, which he himself executed several times.
And that he should now be wearing the red and white jersey? Totally unimaginable, yet not unrealistic. In fact, Diego Simeone would love to work with the Portuguese phenomenon, and the 37-year-old striker himself would probably not resist this option. The Champions League is a tribute to the more powerful.
But the move would make the Funchal native a lot of enemies. Not only would Manchester United fans be angry, he would leave after just one year. But it would also bite hard at Real Madrid, for whom he is an icon and their biggest idol.
And to make matters worse, he would not receive a friendly welcome in the east of Madrid either. For the Colchoneros took on Numancia in a friendly on Wednesday and the fans had a clear message ready.
“CR7 is not welcome,” read a sign from Rojiblancos supporters behind Jan Oblak’s goal.
So a transfer to Atlético is not very likely. So where will Ronaldo go after all? Or will he stay at Manchester United?
