Viktoria Plzeň has played the first of the two matches of the last Champions League preliminary round against Karabakh, in which we witnessed two different halves. However, Plzeň coach Michal Bílek assesses the match on Azerbaijani soil positively.
The Pilsen team took a very promising result to the rematch, which will take place on Tuesday 23 August, when they drew 0:0 on the hot Azerbaijani soil.
The Westerners entered the match very actively and as far as the football aspect is concerned, the spectators must have enjoyed the first half. Both teams created several chances, but Karabakh clearly had more of the game in the second half.
“We came here for a good result and I think we managed to do it. We knew it would not be an easy game. In the first half, the opponent created some scoring opportunities, but we did too. It’s a pity we didn’t convert them. In the second half we defended honestly and didn’t let them do anything,” said Bílek in an interview for the club website.
In any case, Karabakh showed in this first match with Viktoria Plzeň that they are a very strong team and despite the promising result, the West Bohemians are far from certain in their home environment. This is how coach Bílek answered the question how they want to play in the home rematch.
“So that it brings us success. We will also take our knowledge from today’s game as a basis. Karabakh showed that if we give their players some space, they will get up quickly. They are a dangerous team,” Viktoria Plzeň coach realizes.
Viktoria will be able to count on a raucous crowd in their home game, however, as the Pilsen team is already reporting a sell-out.
However, Plzeň are counting on a noticeable loss, as captain and back row stalwart Lukáš Hejda cannot play due to a card penalty.
“He will be missing a lot. He is our captain, best defender and simply a key player. But I believe we have the quality in the team to replace him. The feeling of playing at home is always better. I believe that we will be victorious in front of our own fans and we will qualify for the Champions League,” added coach Bilík Jindřich Staněk.
