Slavia only drew at Sivasspor in the Conference League on Thursday, although they had enormous pressure and took 27 shots. What did their captain Tomáš Holeš say after the game?

Slavia went into Thursday’s game in good form, having scored 20 goals and assisted just once in their last five games. On the other hand, they lost two points in Uherské Hradiště in a 1-1 draw with Slovácko.

That the two lost points will not affect the psyche was already indicated at the beginning. The Seškivans took the lead in the fifth minute thanks to Peter Olayinka and Sivasspor continued to dominate in the following minutes. However, the important second goal was not scored.

“We scored a goal, we started well. Then our game got worse. The first half was not good from us. We didn’t deserve to win for that first half, in the second half it was better, we had some chances there. They blocked a shot into an empty net, then we had a penalty. A point is not enough for us,” Holeš told the club website.

The Turkish side reduced the deficit in the first half from their first big chance, but from that moment on, the nervousness was evident. The break came in handy for both teams, Slavie’s performance was getting worse by the minute, the home team was running out of energy.

After the change of sides, the injured Taras Kacharaba had to be substituted, Eduardo Santos is recovering from an injury, and Holeš stepped in at fullback. He had a lot of work to do with the opponent’s breaks, which were not few on the bumpy terrain.

“The coaches wanted me to make things a bit tighter at the back. We had a lot of players staying up top and threatening from breakaways. The first half they gave us a goal out of that as well. We needed to close it down at the back so they wouldn’t come on the counter-attack,” continued the Slavia captain.

It wasn’t until the end of the match that the Red and Whites got into a similar pressure as they had in the opener. Lukáš Provod and Stanislav Tecl burned big chances, and Provod missed a penalty in the setup after a foul on Christo Tiéhi.

Slavia didn’t win their opening away game, just like in the previous five seasons in Europe. Last year in the group stage, they brought only a point from the opponent’s field for a draw with Union Berlin, and lost at Feyenoord and in Haifa.

“It’s true that the game probably fits into our away woes. I can’t explain that we can’t run as much, be as aggressive and as disgusting as we are at home in games like this. I don’t know what it is. We have to tell ourselves that and try to change it because we can’t play like that,” Holeš said.
