Was the Italian fans’ anger towards Ferrari justified? Carlos Sainz responds to the wave of criticism: it’s not fair to us!
Ferrari has already made disastrous strategic decisions in several races this season, leading to massive criticism not only from its own fans. But Carlos Sainz is standing up for his team. What did he say to all the critics?
Ferrari has already made disastrous strategic decisions in several races this season, leading to massive criticism not only from its own fans. But Carlos Sainz is standing up for his team. What did he say to all the critics?
After the British Grand Prix, Ferrari was massively pilloried, not only by many experts, but also by its own fan community.
But it wasn’t just the race at Silverstone where Ferrari simply pissed off the Italian fans.
However, Charles Leclerc lost his victory not only in the British Grand Prix, but also in Monaco. And it was also due to a very poor team strategy. The fire of criticism was replaced by sadness, at least in one half of the Ferrari garage.
Leclerc drove to a fairly clear victory at the Red Bull Ring, and it could have been a double if Sainz hadn’t literally burnt his engine. That’s also why he’ll start from the very tail of the grid in France, and therefore to replace components of his power unit.
So in Saturday’s qualifying, Sainz helped his teammate to a faster time by providing him with a ‘slipstream’, which is an air bag provided by the car in front of you, which in turn cuts the air in front of you.
As a result, Leclerc was quicker and set a time that was enough for pole position. The 24-year-old Monegasque will thus start from first place at the Paul Ricard circuit.
However, Sainz reacted to the above criticism in a recent interview and understandably defended his stable. In his opinion, it’s not fair.
Sainz’s statement
“I think we have received quite a lot of criticism. And I think it’s a bit unfair because every team in the season makes some mistakes with regard to tyre choice, pit stops and so on,” Sainz defends Ferrari, whose words were quoted by Motorsport.
“I think this year so far has been very solid strategically and I think today proves it. Also, the relationship with Charles and the way the team works, I think it proves again that it works very well and we can work together,” he explains.
“It’s nice to see. I think you have to let us and Ferrari know that we had a very good day (the race, qualifying – ed.),” he concluded.
