Jiří Procházka has a battle with Alex Pereira ahead of him. How will it turn out? That’s what Johnny Walker and Magomed Ankalaev tried to answer, the men who will compete for a possible challenger for the new welterweight title.
Jiří Procházka has a battle with Alex Pereira ahead of him. How will it turn out? That’s what Johnny Walker and Magomed Ankalaev tried to answer, the men who will compete for a possible challenger for the new welterweight title.
Although UFC 295 doesn’t take place until November 11, Johnny Walker and Magomed Ankalaev talked about the Prochazka vs Pereira duel on the occasion of their fight. That’s because they’ll face each other on Saturday, October 21 at the UFC 294 gala.
The Brazilian fighter, who definitely may not be everyone’s cup of tea, will take on Magomed Ankalaev. He boasts an 18-1-1 record. He last lost in March 2018 in his UFC debut.
It’s Walker who’s experiencing something of a hilarious reboot. He entered the UFC with three wins, only to lose four of his five fights, be stopped three times in hard fashion, and the question was whether he still had a chance to succeed in the organization. There was a lot of talk about his weak chin.
But the Brazilian has worked on himself, improved, adapted his style to his situation. He’s won his last three fights. And if he wins now, he could be in contention for the title. But the same goes for Ankalaev, who wants to get back on a winning streak after his draw with Jan Blachowicz.
Whoever wins could challenge the new UFC champion. That will be either Jiri Prochazka or Alex Pereira.
How do Ankalaev and Walker see the Prochazka vs. Pereira fight?
“The fight with Ankalaev will be a big test. It will show that I am ready for the title. God willing, if I win, I will have a chance to face Prochazka or Pereira. It’s in the future, but I’m already thinking about it. I’m going to go see the fight in New York,” Walker told MMA Fighting.
Jiri Prochazka is coming back from a serious injury, while Alex Pereira is on a roll. It’s expected to be a spectacular fight, especially in the standup department. The Moravian samurai himself recently spoke about the fight.
“Both are great strikers with knockout power. They can finish anyone, we already know that. But they have the same problem. Their hands are too low. You can’t blink at this weight. If the glove touches your face, you’re asleep,” Walker says.
“I hope they completely break each other in a five-round fight,” added the Brazilian fighter, alluding to his recent past when it wasn’t too hard to knock him out when he bought too much in his fights.
“You have to understand that we hurt each other all the time. We leave a piece of ourselves in every fight. It’s a brutal sport. It takes a heavy toll on your lifestyle, your bones, your body. If they fight for five rounds, they’re bound to come out with an injury. Then I’ll go after them,” he explains.
Ankalaev wasn’t so forthcoming, he just wants to focus on the fight with Walker. However, he believes it is a very attractive duel. “I think if it goes five rounds, Walker will win. If it ends quickly, Pereira will probably be the winner,” MMA News quoted him as saying.
