UFC champion Jiri Prochazka talks about weight classes within martial arts. They are a mere obligation for him, he doesn’t believe in weight divisions and is open to potential fights across different categories in the future.

Walk doesn’t believe in weight classes in fighting

Jiri Prochazka won the championship belt of the most prestigious MMA organization in the world less than two months ago. His memorable title bout with Glover Teixeira sent shockwaves around the martial arts world.

Of course, winning the title didn’t escape the other fighters in the UFC who began to challenge him. Most of his challenges have of course come from the welterweight division where he holds the championship belt. However, there were also challenges from fighters in the lower weight classes.

Regarding the division of fighters into weight classes, Jiri talked about it in a recent interview. “I don’t believe in weight classes, for me it’s just a fight,” he explained to the Startitup youtube channel. “I could fight a hundred and twenty pound guy, as well as an eighty pound guy,” the Moravian fighter doesn’t set firm limits.

Let Usman come, says the Moravian samurai

Making the biggest splash was the pound-for-pound number one across all weight classes, “Nigeria’s nightmare” Kamaru Usman fighting in the welterweight division. He recently sent out a message to the media that his skills go so far that he is confident about Walk, who fights two weight classes above him.

“Let it go, let him come and try it,” the Czech champion doesn’t resist such an idea. “At least it would be a nice challenge, he is a first-class fighter and he faces those challenges beautifully,” he said about the Nigerian warrior.

“You have to remember that all the lightweights can generate power as well as the heavyweights,” he said, aware of the strength of the fighters in the lower weight classes. ” Just like the heavy ones, who can be just as fast,” he said.

But his immediate future is at welterweight

“It’s all about how you can control your skills and abilities,” he described the fighters’ characteristics. “Then when you realise that you have some control over these things, the path is open,” he added.

“Whoever says what they want, I have a clear position, and that is to defend the title and hold on to the welterweight championship,” he outlined his immediate plans. “If it comes to it, I’ll jump to another weight class,” he added.
