On Tuesday afternoon, Markéta Vondroušová played her first Wimbledon singles quarterfinal match. Her opening match against Jessica Pegula ended in victory and promotion thanks to a third set reversal.

The native of Sokolov first defeated Peyton Stearns, Veronika Kudermetova and Donna Vekic rather smoothly in the previous round of the third Grand Slam of the season. She had to turn around the unfavourable match situation only in the eighth round, in which she defeated her compatriot Maria Bouzkova 2: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 3.

Pegula, who is ranked fourth in the world rankings, went through Lauren Davis, Cristina Bucsa, Elisabetta Cocciaretta and Lesja Curenkova. In the quarter-finals, the US tennis player was facing the current 42nd ranked singles player, whom she has never played against.

Thanks to a fast break, the American entered the opening set better, but Vondrousova was able to erase the deficit soon. The key moment came in the ninth game when Pegula failed to hold her serve. The Czech then went on to win the set 6:4.

The next game was not so good. She allowed her opponent to use two break points, the second of which was also a converted set point. The set ended in a 2:6 loss.

The decisive third part of the duel was interrupted by a break caused by rain at 1:3 from the Czech point of view. During the break the organizers pulled the roof over court 1.

In the first game after the break, the American star increased her lead, but did not win the match. Vondroušová showed a great turnaround in the remaining game, breaking her opponent’s serve twice in a row.

She then converted her second match point on her serve to 6:4 and was able to celebrate one of her greatest successes. It will be the second time in her life that she will play a semi-final at one of the “Big Four” events.

Her previous success was on clay in Paris. At the 2019 French Open, she finally made it to the title match. That time, she scored a clear defeat against Ashleigh Barty, namely 1:6 and 3:6.

The participation in the semi-finals of Wimbledon for the silver medalist from the previous year’s Olympics in Tokyo Markéta Vondroušová means a significant move up the WTA rankings, which, of course, in the case of further wins can be even greater. At the moment, according to the live-tennis. eu website, she would jump 19 positions to 23rd place.
