Early Monday morning, tennis fans finally got to see it! The first Grand Slam tournament of the year is here and right from the morning two of our representatives were in the first round.
Shortly after 5 a.m. the matches of Markéta Vondroušová and Katerina Siniakova started. The former was a clear favourite in her match with Rebeca Peterson, while the latter was only a slight favourite with Fionna Ferro. At least according to the bookmakers.
And how did they both do? They were two fairly evenly matched fights, both lasting just over two hours and twenty minutes. But with different results.
Vondroušová lost the first set 2::6, but won the next two sets 7::5 and thus secured her promotion.
Siniakova, on the other hand, won the first set in a tiebreak, but lost the next two sets 6:2 and 6:4. So she has to settle for a first round bye.
Petra Kvitová’s match is still on the agenda for Monday.
Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams are the big favourites of the tournament.
