Viva Ronaldo! Liverpool fans rubbed salt in United’s wounds and chanted the Portuguese’s name
Manchester United can’t imagine a greater disgrace. The upstart Red Devils have conceded seven goals to hated rivals Liverpool and any title ambitions are probably over. Moreover, Liverpool fans have been invoking the name of Cristiano Ronaldo.

If Manchester United beat Liverpool, they would be nine points behind first-placed Arsenal and would have a game to spare. That would mean only six points if they won and with twelve rounds to go, the title was still quite realistically in play.
But any hopes, and especially the Red Devils’ morale, were taken away by Liverpool. The latter crushed their rivals by a seven-goal margin. It was 1:0 going into the cabins when Gakpo scored two minutes before half-time.
But the half-time break sent the teams into completely different universes. Liverpool scored 6 goals in the second half, Manchester United players were like on a merry-go-round.
Núñez scored twice, Salah scored twice, Gakpo added a second goal and substitute Firmino hammered home the final seventh goal.
Reds fans added more salt to the wounds of their rivals when the whole of Anfield Road started calling Cristiano Ronaldo’s name. It was the Portuguese who didn’t leave Manchester United on good terms, accusing the club and coach of a lack of respect for him, with the fans and coach in turn making it clear that United were better off without him.
“Viva Ronaldo! Running down the wing, Hear United sing, Viva Ronaldo,” is the chant the fans used to celebrate Cristiano Ronaldo when he played for them from 2003-2009, and they have revived it since his return. Now, however, it is being chanted by laughing Liverpool fans.
Liverpool fans generally make no secret of their great respect for Cristiano Ronaldo. Last season, for example, in a duel at Anfield Road in the seventh minute, the entire stadium stood up and applauded in support of Ronaldo, who had lost his newborn son moments before.
