Spanish clubs advanced to the Champions League semifinals on Tuesday
Spanish clubs scored a footballing feast in Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final rematch as they qualified for the next knockout stage of the final at the Parc des Princes in May.
Real Madrid knocked out Chelsea of London in extra time in a nerve-wracking match despite losing their home game.
Villarreal drew in a David and Goliath battle at the Allianz Arena in Munich and advanced to the Champions League semifinals after the closest win of the first leg from Spain.
After the change of sides, Robert Lewandowski scored his thirteenth Champions League goal. But two minutes from the end, Nigerian Chukwueze silenced the Munich sanctuary with a shot under the crossbar.
The battle for Europe’s top league is now in full swing
In recent times, the retreat of Spanish clubs from the top tiers of European football after years of plenty, and especially after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, has been the talk of the footballing world. The level of Spain’s La Liga has often been derided as a “farmer’s league”.
The truth is that English clubs have dominated the European scene in recent years, and it is not only through marketing power that the Premier League has been widely regarded as the strongest league in Europe. So after Manchester City’s league match against Liverpool on Sunday, which was an advertisement for football, the voices ridiculing other European leagues have become much louder.
Villarreal of the Farmers’ League celebrate ‘unexpected’ promotion
But advancing Villarreal posted a humorous post on their social media in an attempt to silence the doubters of Spanish football. In the post, a farmer dressed in yellow rides a tractor and the picture is captioned “Welcome to the UEFA Farmers’ League”.
Villarreal, of course, are celebrating their shock progress over the favourites from Munich. But how shocking is debatable given Bayern’s poor form and the fact that the Spanish side’s manager Unai Emery is a European Cup specialist, having won the Europa League four times with his teams. The last time was last year with Villarreal, when he beat the star-studded Manchester United in the final match.
Already today, the next Champions League quarter-final rematches are on the agenda, where Manchester City and Liverpool, considered by many to be the best clubs in Europe, will be defending solidly played duels. The Citizens take on another Spanish side, Atlético Madrid, and Liverpool host Benfica.
If both English clubs progress, we can look forward to seeing the Farmers’ League compared to the British elite. City would face Real Madrid and Liverpool would face Villarreal in the final.
