Viktoria Plzeň has had one successful preliminary round, but two more are still to come. They will open the third preliminary round at home against Malta’s Gzira. What to bet on?
Exactly one year ago, Viktoria Plzen were fighting for the Champions League. Against all odds, it made it through three preliminary rounds to the group stage, where it played Barcelona, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.
However, in the spring it ran out of breath in the league and finished in third place. In the cup preliminary rounds, they are only fighting for the Conference League. And in the second preliminary round, she unexpectedly broke into a sweat.
They came up against Drita from Kosovo and the match ended in a goalless draw. The rematch was absolutely crazy. Pilsen went ahead in the 76th minute, but Drita equalised in the second minute of the setup.
But then the power went out at the stadium and the match was abandoned. In the end, Erik Jirka decided the game from a penalty in the 21st minute. Dzira came up against Luxembourg Dudelange, won 2:0 at home, but lost 1:2 in the rematch, which was enough to advance.
In the first preliminary round they faced Glentoran from Northern Ireland, both games ended in a draw and Gzira advanced on penalties.
Pilsen was very lucky with the draw. Both Drita and Gzira and possibly Tobol or Derry City in the fourth preliminary round are opponents that the Czech team should have no major problems beating. Viktoria is the clear favourite against the Maltese side.
However, more goals could fall. In the four matches Gzira has played, four goals have been scored once, three goals twice and only two goals once.
Pilsen drew 0:0 at home with Drita, but had enough chances which they didn’t convert. In the rematch, three more goals were scored. That’s why I think that this time Viktoria will not want to leave the relegation to the rematch, and we might see more goals in the match.
