Viktoria Plzeň says goodbye to the European Cup. In the group stage of the Champions League, they failed to get a single point, falling 2:4 in their last match against Barcelona. However, the team put on a performance that really deserved the post-match applause.
Viktoria Plzeň went into the match with the aim of beating one of the best teams in the world, but they did not shine in the difficult group and will only play the Europa League again in the spring.
However, her goal did not work out. Already in the sixth minute, after a run, Jindřich Staněk couldn’t completely clear the ball and Marcos Alonso headed it into the net on the goal line.
Viktoria benefited from counter-attacks and had their chances. Tomas Chorý hit the crossbar with a header after twenty minutes, and in the 30th minute Lukas Kalvach let the visitors’ goalkeeper stand out from an independent break.
When Viktoria couldn’t do so, Barcelona stepped up. Jordi Alba found Ferran Torres a minute before the end of the half and he had no problem getting the ball past goalkeeper Stanek.
In the second half, hope came for Plzen. After a foul by Pablo Torre, Tomas Chorý took the penalty kick and kept his composure to send the goalkeeper the other way.
However, the celebrations of Viktoria fans did not last long, two minutes later Torres again increased the score to 1::3, this time found by Brazilian Raphinha.
But Viktoria didn’t give up and kept fighting. Adam Vlkanova found Chorý in the 63rd minute, whose header reduced it to 2: 3. This helped Viktoria mentally, Václav Pilař just missed the right post shortly after.
In the 75th minute, however, the visitors struck again, Torre shot through everything in his path and then got injured. In the 83rd minute, the home side came close to reducing the deficit, but Erik Jirka only hit the bar.
The final score was 2: 4, which is not bad and perfectly illustrates the quality of Viktoria’s performance, which was the best of the whole group stage.
