The Victorians played their best game of the Champions League group stage on Tuesday. However, two goals in Barcelona’s net were not enough to get a point. However, coach Michal Bílek could not be dissatisfied after the match and praised his charges.
Barcelona came to Plzeň with a weakened squad and with the certainty that no result would help them to qualify for the Champions League. Thanks to this, Viktoria’s players also played well and gave a good performance.
They created chances almost the whole game and outplayed their opponents. The Victorians fired an incredible 23 shots, but only eight of them were on goalkeeper Iñaki Peña.
The Catalans were more productive, with seven of their 11 shots going on target. Moreover, they scored 4 goals from these chances, while Viktoria scored only two and left defeated.
“I have to praise us because the players worked very well throughout the game. On the other hand, it’s a bit worse to evaluate in the sense that the result is not entirely favourable for us. But we definitely played the best game in the group,” coach Michal Bílek said at the press conference.
“We scored two goals, we hit the crossbar, the bar… This performance will definitely strengthen us for the next matches,” he added. The Champions League experience is great and now Pilsen can focus purely on the league and winning the title.
“It’s experience, experience and a huge motivation for the next matches. Now we want to fight for the top positions in our league and try to get into the European Cup group next season,” the Pilsen manager concluded.
Viktoria has three last league matches to play. On Saturday they will face Sparta at home, then they go to Brno and at the weekend they will finish the autumn away against Pardubice.
