The tennis tour has moved from Asia to Europe and this week sees ATP 500 tournaments in Basel and Vienna. The Erste Bank Open in the Austrian capital will also welcome two Czech representatives in singles.
Jiri Lehecka is the 31st player in the ATP ranking and his place in the main event was secured. Tomáš Macháč had to secure his position among the 32 participants in the qualification, to which he was hastily transferred from Stockholm.
Vienna’s “Five Hundred” will also welcome plenty of interesting faces. Among the ATP elite, the Russians Medvedev and Rubljov, the Greek Tsitsipas, the Italian Sinner and Alexander Zverev from Germany will be present.
The lot of Czech tennis players
Jiri Lehecka will try to improve his recent results. He opens the tournament on Monday with American Wolf.
The Czech tennis number one has been struggling since the Davis Cup. Lehecka has won only one of his four matches this season.
Machac’s last few months have been the opposite story. The 23-year-old Czech has triumphed in two Challengers and also performed well last week in Stockholm, where he took on Switzerland’s Wawrinka.
He will play Australian Vukic in Vienna. He is twenty places above the Czech tennis player, but he is not in great shape. He has won three of his last ten matches.
In any case, Macháč will have an interesting opponent if he advances. He will face the winner of the Tsitsipas – Thiem duel. The tournament’s top four and the home player have their motivation taken care of.
Finally..
The Czech tennis players enter the Vienna tournament in a completely different situation. Machac will definitely welcome a free Monday, his schedule has been incredibly demanding in recent days. Lehecka, in his current form, will be happy for any victory.
