VIDEO: You’ve never seen this before. Adli was shown two yellow cards for simulation, the referee apologised each time after VAR intervened and ordered a penalty for his Leverkusen side!
This Sunday was quite wild in the football world and there was a lot going on. Lots of goals, penalties and cards. Even the spectators at the BayArena in Leverkusen could not complain about boredom. The home side turned the game against Bayern Munich around thanks to two penalty kick goals! But how the penalties came about is truly unique.

After a disappointing start to the season, the Bayer Leverkusen footballers have currently picked themselves up tremendously. The last time they tasted defeat was exactly one month ago.
Since then, they have not lost six competitive matches in a row. So there was no reason not to try and grab some points today against Bayern Munich. The game was fairly evenly matched and the home side didn’t pull any punches.
However, the way they got the points was quite unusual. First, Kimmich sent Munich into the lead in the 22nd minute after a pass from Goretzka.
In the 55th minute, Amine Adli made his way into the opposition’s penalty area, only to be tackled from behind by one of the men in white, who knocked the ball away. As a result, he crumpled to the ground. Head referee Stieler came running in with a clear verdict.
And a yellow card in his hand, which he showed to Adli. He threw the kick angrily to the turf. But the whole situation was examined by the VAR system. Subsequently, the referee on the field of play was also called in to look at the whole situation on the screen.
And that’s how the changes were made. Adli’s yellow card was rescinded and he and the head referee had a friendly high-five as a gesture of apology. The penalty was easily converted by Exequiel Palacios.
Some eighteen minutes later, everyone present was in a frenzy. Adli broke into the big box and poked the ball in when Upamecano hit it with a clumsy slip. The referee clearly and confidently drew a yellow card for simulation, and the rest is pretty much history.
Intervention with VAR, watching the replays on the monitor, then an apology towards Adli and the yellow card being rescinded. This time it was Upamecano, on the other hand, who saw the yellow card from close range. Again Palacios set the ball up and again he made no mistake!
The home side thus gained a valuable 3 points against a very strong opponent. Instead of two yellow cards for simulation, there were two penalties. In the first situation, that can happen, but that it was repeated exactly the second time? That was a bit comical.
