You’ve seen it all on football pitches? Don’t believe it. Football is still one of the biggest phenomena in sports and offers moments that amaze millions of fans around the world every day. In Brazil, it is literally a religion and it is no wonder that players will do absolutely anything to win.
But first things first. On Sunday night, the last round of the Taça Guanabara state football league in the state of Rio de Janeiro was underway in Brazil. Twelve teams are playing in the competition, fighting to qualify for the play-offs.
Only four teams will make it through to the knockout stage to win the title. The match between Fluminense and Botafogo has already been virtually decided. All the more astonishing is the moment at the end of the match that became a hit on social media.
The visitors went for the win from the very beginning of the match. After just a quarter of an hour of play they were already two goals up. But the home team did not fold their arms and by half-time had reduced the gap to a single goal. Although the home side equalised eight minutes before the end of regulation time, the visitors went ahead again a few minutes later.

The Botafogo players naturally tried to stall the flow of the match in the setup, but what happened in the 97th minute raised the bar for stalling to a new level. Young striker Yarlen Faustino Augusto was left lying off the field with an injury, but then a comical tug of war ensued.
First, his teammate, in an attempt to cut another few dozen seconds off the setup, dragged Augusto back onto the field. The home goalkeeper did put the injured youngster back off the pitch, but amazing fortitude was shown by the warming up Botafogo player who put him back on the pitch.
A funny moment indeed, don’t you think? Interestingly, the only one who received a caution from the referee was the home goalkeeper Felipe Alves. And Botafogo added the decisive goal at the very end of the game. Even so, the home side Fluminense advanced to the play-offs of the competition, while the visitors will fight for the less prestigious Taça Rio.
