While the European Championship qualifiers are being played in Europe, the Nations League matches are being played in North and Central America. Martinique is not doing too well in the latter, but its striker Mickael Biron has made sure that he is in the news. He scored a great goal, but then got a red card.

The League of Nations in the Americas is now over. For example, Martinique and Costa Rica played last night. Probably few would have expected that the most beautiful goal of the weekend would be scored here, but it was.

Martinique is the underdog in its group. After four games, it has just one point from its draw with Panama. The latter is first for a change, but still has to face Costa Rica, who are also seeking to qualify for the play-offs in League A.

But back to Martinique and Costa Rica. In the 18th minute, they managed to open the scoring with a goal that has been making the rounds on social media. Twenty-five-year-old striker Mickael Biron made a big splash.

The player of the Belgian second division team RWD Molenbeek showed his technical prowess when, after receiving the ball, he imitated the iconic turn of the legendary scorer Dennis Bergkamp and sent Martinique into a 1:0 lead.

Specifically, the goal in question is Bergkamp’s goal into the Newcastle United net while still in an Arsenal jersey. The year was 2002 when the Dutch phenomenon dazzled the world with another unique goal.

But Biron didn’t just draw attention to himself with a fantastic goal. In fact, he did his team a serious disservice a few minutes later, when he was unwisely sent off with 11 minutes left in the first half.

Biron showed that technical ability is not always the most important thing. He can score goals. He scored them in the second French league and he is scoring them in Belgium. He is also relied upon by the national team, so he will have to forgo such escapades in the future.
