Argentina. A country full of excellent footballers, but also hotheads. And that’s often what football matches look like there. And so it was on Sunday night. The Trofeo de Campeones Cup final ended with 10 players sent off.
On Sunday night, referee Facundo Tello had a perfect preparation for the World Cup in Qatar, where he will of course not be absent. He had to take on the players of Argentine clubs Boca Juniors and Racing Club.
These two teams were competing for the Trofeo de Campeones trophy. Boca Juniors was the favourite, after all they had a great year and won the league. Moreover, Norberto Briasco opened the scoring in the 19th minute.
However, in the 22nd minute, Matias Rojas scored the equaliser for Racing. And after a relatively calm first half, few would have expected the match to turn into an inferno that would not even be possible to finish until the very end. There were only three yellow cards, that’s all.
The first major escalation came in the second half. The Boca players wanted to ask the referee for a penalty. So much so that there was a clash between Sebastian Villa and Johan Carbonero. But referee Tello didn’t take kindly to them and sent them both to the showers early.
The end of extra time brought hell
And then came the overtime. Twenty minutes in, the third red card of the game came. Argentine midfielder Alan Varela deservedly saw it after his foul. Anyone who thought that this would be the last sending off would be mistaken.
Two minutes before the end of regulation time in extra time, 19-year-old Carlos Jonas Alcaraz sent Racing into the lead and his celebration was not to the liking of the Boca players. Several came up behind him and pulled them by the ear or threw the ball at him.
Of course, they wanted to play as soon as possible, so their haste was understandable. However, their behaviour was unacceptable to the referee. The Racing players didn’t take it lying down either and there were several altercations. During these, six players were sent off. Two on the Racing side, four on the Boca side.
The duel between these teams was then ended by Dario Benedetto, who, after the game had started, slashed an opposing player and drew another red card. With only five players on the pitch, Boca lost the game early and didn’t get time to equalize.
