Formula 1 has already had 16 races this season, with Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix dominated by Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. The prize for the most effective manoeuvre, however, is likely to go to Lewis Hamilton, who passed two drivers at once on lap 36.
The seven-time champion started from the back of the grid due to a penalty for changing power unit components, and had to work his way up the order as the race progressed.
The Italian Grand Prix offered the withdrawal of several rivals, which of course the drivers starting from the very tail of the grid benefited from. Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll and Daniel Ricciardo all finished the sixteenth round of the season early.
It should be noted that Hamilton, as well as Carlos Sainz starting from 17th position, showed very solid driving and also great overtaking manoeuvres.
The fans probably got the best of him on lap 36, when he outperformed both Lando Norris and Pierre Gasly on the exit of turn two.
This manoeuvre would not have happened, however, had Norris’ pit stop not lasted more than five seconds. The McLaren driver lost at least 2.5 seconds in the pits.
In ideal conditions, Norris would have gone out ahead of not only Gasly and Hamilton, but also his teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
However, both drivers starting from the back positions managed to make it into the top five. Hamilton finished the Italian Grand Prix in fifth place, with Sainz in fourth. Verstappen took his eleventh win of the season, with Charles Leclerc and George Russell rounding out the podium in second and third respectively.
You can then see what the race at Monza in Italy did to the standings of both championships in the attached Twitter post below.
