VIDEO: West Ham’s goal was “helped” by referee’s obstruction of Bowen

Just like a week ago against Fulham, West Ham lose this time in a league game, having scored after a controversial moment against Southampton. The head referee prevented Jarrod Bowen from playing, while the goal was preceded by a poorly thrown clearance.
Southampton went into the game from relegation eighteenth in the table, and with terrible form, having lost their last four rounds. They were just two points behind last-placed Nottingham. A week ago they were beaten 0-4 by Manchester City.
West Ham, on the other hand, have won their last two league games, plus they beat Anderlecht Brussels in the Conference League on Thursday to secure promotion to the play-offs. The Hammers were clearly more at ease than the home side.
Nevertheless, Southampton started the game actively and were rewarded in the 20th minute. After a Kyle Walker-Peters free-kick, Che Adams extended to Romain Perraud, who sat up with a teasing shot.
The West Ham players immediately ran to the head referee. They complained about the referee’s obstruction of play and wanted the referee’s ball. But they demanded it in vain, because it only comes into effect if the referee touches the ball.
Moreover, the replay showed that the home team’s goal should not have stood after all because of Walker-Peters’ foul on the throw-in. But VAR did not solve the situation and Saints kept the 1:0 lead until the end of the first half.
