West Ham won a six-point battle with Southampton, beating them 1-0 at home. Nayef Aguerd scored with a precise header. Tomas Soucek started in the starting line-up for the Hammers, Vladimir Coufal did not make it into the game.
The opening minutes were played from whitewash to whitewash, in the final phase it was clear that the penultimate was playing with the last. The visitors were more active, with Theo Walcott firing dangerously in the 18th minute, but missing the near post by a whisker.
The Hammers struck from their first shot on target, Nayef Aguerd split the net with a header in the 25th minute. An offside was investigated three minutes in, but the VAR failed to spot it.
Romain Perraud could have equalised at the other end, but Lukasz Fabianski flashed an excellent save. Otherwise, the end of the first half belonged to the home side, culminating in Jarrod Bowen’s cross in injury time.
The home team went into the box with a 1:0 lead. After the change of sides, the game was full of inaccuracies on both sides. In the 56th minute, Bowen scored on a breakaway, but missed the left post by inches.
Kamaldeen Sulemana tried his luck for the visitors, but he didn’t threaten the goalkeeper either. Fabianski also dealt with subsequent attempts by Romeo Lavia and Carlos Alcaraz from outside the box, especially the first shot was very uncomfortable.
Said Benrahma could have given the Hammers a calm, but his direct kick was cleared by Gavin Bazunu. Lucas Paqueta had an even better opportunity, but he shot over from just inside the area. And he almost regretted it when Paul Onuachu hit the crossbar in the 83rd minute.
In the end, West Ham held on to win 1-0 and jumped up to 14th place, one point above the relegation zone. Southampton remain last.
