West lost its fifth league game in a row. With Vladimír Coufal and without Tomáš Souček in the starting line-up, they fell 0:2 in the London derby to Brentford.
West Ham started the match actively after a minute of applause in memory of the late Brazilian Pelé, and in the fifth minute Declan Rice shot and hit the bar. Six minutes later Craig Dawson headed and just missed the back post.
And in the 16th minute, the home side went behind from their opponents’ first big chance. Christian Norgaard’s shot was still parried by Lukasz Fabianski, but Ivan Toney’s finish was short.
The Hammers continued to be more active, but struggled in the final stages against an organised defence. And in the 43rd minute, Brentford struck for the second time. Toney found the onrushing Josh Da Silva and he had an easy job.
Lucas Paqueta was on hand to reduce the arrears but missed the far post by a whisker. After the change of sides, the home side lacked the intensity of the opening half, until Jarrod Bowen fired over from the edge of the box in the 57th minute, but too weakly.
At the other end, Saman Ghodos sent in a dangerous volley, but Fabianski made the save. In the 77th minute, another substitute could have made the final difference, but Yoane Wissa’s shot was weak and went wide of the target.
West Ham didn’t take their chance either, Dawson heading under the crossbar in the 82nd minute, but David Raya made an excellent save. Brentford managed the end result, but the big blemish was the injury to Toney. He was carried off on a stretcher.
Brentford’s 2-0 win takes them into ninth place for the day at least, while West Ham remain 17th, just a point above the relegation zone.
