It is the 58th minute of the game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning. The home team in blue jerseys is playing all in one card, calling their goalie to the bench. The puck is intercepted by Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry. He lifts his head and sends it across the rink and into the net.
“Jarry goes to the empty net… He’s coming to the net… And he scores! We’ve witnessedhistory,” SportsNet’s overseas commentator Josh Getzoff relives the extraordinary hockey moment.
Tristan Jarry is only the 14th goalie in history to score a goal. The seventh to do so in the last 20 years and the first ever to do so in a Penguins jersey. In total, the organization has registered 15,696 goals. For the first time, a goaltender is on the scorers list.
“Honestly, it’s a pretty nice feeling. It’s something that doesn’t happen very often. But to be honest, winning means more,” the 28-year-old Canadian native modestly told the Penguins’ club website. His goal was the confirmation of a 4-2 win in Tampa.
For Pittsburgh, the win is even more valuable because they were already down 2-0 in the game. In addition, the Penguins had lost five times in the previous seven games. They are currently three points behind the playoffs, but they have two more games to play than Washington, which is currently in last place in the Metropolitan Division.
The perfect scenario, Jarry described
The Penguins hero explained after the game that all the details played out exactly according to the perfect scenario: “The opponent put the puck right at the net and it was coming towards me slowly.” Then Jarry looked up and saw plenty of open space.
When he sent the puck off his stick, the entire Penguins’ bench immediately rose to its feet. So all of Jarry’s teammates saw when the puck went into the net. With one minute and eight seconds left in the game.
“Our bench was excited when it happened. Everybody was fired up. It‘s something you don’t see that often,” Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said with a smile. Captain Sidney Crosby, who was part of such a moment for the first time in his career, also expressed his excitement. Indeed, so were most of the people present at Amalie Arena.
Otherwise, Tristan Jarry already knows the feeling of scoring a goal. He’s only the second goalie in history to score in the AHL and NHL, after Chris Mason.
