A battle of individuality versus team spirit. But that’s what you could call the Champions League semi-final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.
In the first match, German discipline prevailed as Bayern won 1: 0. PSG coach Christopher Galtier promised that it would be a completely different football in the rematch.
PSG had two huge chances in the first half. In the 25th minute, PSG kicked off a quick counter-attack that was pulled down the left by Nuno Mendes. The Portuguese found Lionel Messi underneath him on the penalty spot, but Davies flew in and blocked Messi’s shot with a fantastic slide.
In the 38th minute, goalkeeper Yann Sommer received a pass from Matthijs de Ligt, but instead of taking the rebound, he took the knee and looked to pass between the pressing Mbappé-Hakimi pairing.
Logically, this was not a good move, Hakimi poked the ball out to Vitinho who fired into an empty net. It looked like PSG were about to take the lead when suddenly, with a great slide, de Ligt arrived and kicked the ball off the line.
But the game completely turned around in the second half. Bayern started to create dangerous chances and even scored when Choupo-Moting’s header licked a Musiala centre. However, the goal was disallowed due to a close offside by Thomas Muller, who, although he did not reach the ball, did influence Donnarumma.
Bayern, however, did not have to be sorry. Moments later, PSG took the ball in their own penalty area, only for the Bavarians to launch a fierce press.
Verratti tried to wriggle out of the tight space between Muller and Goretzka, but they took the ball away from him, the Bayern captain sent Goretzka into the box, who passed it easily to Choupo-Moting, who had no problem clearing the ball into the net.
