VIDEO: Unusual failure! Haaland sends penalty high over the goal
The Champions League quarter-final rematch between Manchester City and Bayern should have been a formality thanks to the Citizens’ three-goal lead, but the Bavarians didn’t give up. Erling Haaland could have decided the game, but he gave away a penalty.
The Champions League quarter-final rematch between Manchester City and Bayern should have been a formality thanks to the Citizens’ three-goal lead, but the Bavarians didn’t give up. Erling Haaland could have decided the game, but he gave away a penalty.
Bayern knew that catching up with Manchester City’s three-goal lead might be a superhuman task. But he also knew that if he could score an early goal, anything could still happen.
And the Bavarians started decently enough, they had a few chances, the biggest being Leroy Sane’s raid which went just wide of the bar.
But within a minute the game could have been over. Kevin De Bruyne sent in Erling Haaland, who raced in alone on the goalkeeper. But Dayot Upamecano crossed his leg and fouled him from behind. And as he wasted a clear goal scoring opportunity, he was rightly shown a red card.
But the linesman called offside, which was confirmed by technology and the red card was withdrawn.
But the unlucky day, or rather the unlucky Upamecano double-header, continued. In the 34th minute, the French stopper stepped up to meet a shot from the visitors that lightly licked his elbow, resulting in a penalty.
Erling Haaland took the traditional penalty. The Norwegian goalscorer has been almost infallible this season, but even a master carpenter can make mistakes.
Yann Sommer jumped to the right post and Haaland had an open goal, but his attempt was well over.
It was Haaland’s third career missed penalty. The first time he missed a penalty was in January 2021 against Augsburg, the second time in April 2021 against Union Berlin.
