Fans have already started hoping that this will be the year when everything turns for the better. The long-troubled Manchester giant registered six wins and one draw during 2024. Before they ran into Fulham.
Yet it should have been a clear-cut affair. Erik ten Hag’s team took on the Premier League’s twelfth-placed team at their own stadium, and the fans at Old Trafford wanted nothing more than to gain three points. Wrong.
After referee Oliver’s final whistle, the Red Devils were left crying. A 1: 2 defeat means that their quest to move up the ranks guaranteeing a place in next season’s European Cups has been postponed.
After a goalless first half, Calvin Bassey shocked United in the 65th minute. Harry Maguire equalised with a minute left in normal time, but the team from the London suburbs took the last word.
Manchester lost the match at the very end
Former Barcelona player Adama Traore headed the ball in from the right and passed it to Alex Iwobi. The Nigerian, with experience at Arsenal and Everton, stuck his head in and expertly netted three points for his team.
Traore tried to catch up with the returning Maguire, but his speed was no match for the Spaniard. The England international still tried to instruct his fellow defenders but it was no use. At the end of the action, he fell to the turf from exhaustion.
United can correct their hesitation next weekend, but they will have a really difficult time. They are scheduled to travel to rival City’s stadium.
