Toronto lost 2: 4 to Edmonton, but Auston Matthews scored a beautiful opening goal for the Maple Leafs. The American star and his teammate Mitchell Marner outplayed the Oilers’ defence, the former finishing practically into an empty net.

Edmonton defeated Toronto 4-2 on Tuesday night and added two more points to the Western Conference table. However, the visitors had the better start to the game, taking the lead first.

The score of the game changed after just twenty-seven seconds from the opening buzzer. Toronto players got into the offensive zone, where Auston Matthews took the puck. He drove towards the blue line from behind the net, then passed the puck to Mitchell Marner.

But Matthews kept moving and skated all the way to the left circle where the Oilers defense took no notice of him.

Marner made the most of it, sending a pass through the offensive zone to the 26-year-old American, who finished into the open net.

Matthews scored his thirty-fourth goal of the season, while Marner had his twenty-ninth assist. However, you can see the entire Maple Leafs action for yourself in the video below.

Matthews gave Toronto the lead, but Toronto couldn’t…

The star American with the number 34 on his back, along with Marner, gave his team a 1:0 lead, but the Maple Leafs did not win the game. Morgan Rielly scored midway through the second period to make it 2-0, assisted by Matthews and Holmberg.

But at 35:41, the fans at Rogers Place could finally rejoice. Leon Draisaitl reduced the deficit to one goal.

And it wasn’t over for the home team. They added three more goals in the third period to turn the game perfectly in their favor. Derek Ryan, Ryan McLeod and Evan Bouchard scored into an empty net with a minute and a half left.

The Oilers won 4:2 and now occupy the seventh place in the Western Conference with 49 points. Toronto has 50 points and is now No. 6 in the Eastern Conference.
