VIDEO: This penalty is sure to be one of the New Year’s Eve kills! Defender gives free penalty to opponent in Argentine league
This weekend was really rich in interesting football situations. In Manchester three red cards in one minute, in Leverkusen it was also quite wild with penalties, but perhaps this penalty from Argentina surpassed everything. You really don’t see that often.
This weekend was really rich in interesting football situations. In Manchester three red cards in one minute, in Leverkusen it was also quite wild with penalties, but perhaps this penalty from Argentina surpassed everything. You really don’t see that often.
It all took place in the 8th round of the Argentine league in the match between the home team Independiente and the away team Colon Santa Fe. The penalty was converted in the 24th minute of the match.
The visitors’ goalkeeper Ignacio Chicco set the ball up in the small area of the whitewash to take a simple kick away from goal. But he was not alone in having the same intention. He sort of mounted everything, and stopper Paolo Goltz also claimed the ball.
Still doesn’t sound like a situation that should have resulted in a penalty kick? The two main players in this tragicomedy apparently didn’t argue at all or argued very badly.
The goalkeeper briefly played the ball to his ready-looking teammate who was standing next to him, but he understood that he had to take the ball and play the ball himself. As he understood, he did so.
He took the ball in his hands and set it up on the right corner of the small area ready to kick off. However, the home players rightly began to demand a handball and a penalty. Goltz didn’t want to hear any of it and gestured vigorously to deny everything.
Head referee Lamolina reacted similarly at first, around which a ruckus formed from almost all the players on the pitch. However, after the intervention of the video referee, he gave the right to the men in red and they actually got a penalty kick.
Well, it looks strange. But the fact is that the goalkeeper brought the ball into play in the right way from the right place and so taking it by hand was no longer an option at that point. Well, it was, but with pretty substantial consequences.
The home side kicked one more penalty in the second half, far less controversial. The Colon Santa Fe team eventually secured their fifth straight draw in the eleventh minute of stoppage time, when the visitors also kicked a penalty kick, which they were able to convert from the rebound as well to tie the game at 2-2.
