Video: This is how Alexander Ovechkin shoots on the power play. He’s only 58 goals behind Gretzky
Alexander Ovechkin of Russia, who plays for the Washington Capitals, uncompromisingly shot through Colorado Avalanche goalie Alexander Georgiev. And he confirmed his shooting form from the last few games. But above all, he reduced the gap to Wayne Gretzky’s shooting record by another notch.
Ovechkin burned through everything in his path
The Capitals didn’t win the game against Colorado on home ice and lost 3:6. But the captain’s moment came in the 9th minute of the third period when he shot unprecedentedly from the circle on the power play.
With this bomb he corrected the game to 3:4 and influenced the blood in the veins of his teammates. Although the turnaround in the game failed, Alexander Ovechkin proved that his shooting touch has returned. After a lackluster start to the season until the midway point, when he struggled unprecedentedly, he scored a goal for the 6th game in a row.
He scored his 14th goal of the season and 836th in the regular season. This reduced the goal deficit to Gretzky’s record of 58 goals. Still, the Russian cannonballer is having the most miserable season of his career so far.
Meanwhile, at the beginning of the season, there was a lot of discussion about the fact that the shooting record of 894 goals was within Ovechkin’s sight in the span of two seasons. But time can’t be stopped, and this season in particular shows that the Canadian legend’s record won’t be so easy.
Sure, Ovechkin is carrying an entire team that isn’t doing so well this season and the roster is aging. A prime example of this is the Pittsburgh team, which is also building its game on veterans.
However, in the last few games, the fans have once again turned their attention as the Washington cannonballer has gotten back into shooting mode. And is once again discussing when the record will fall. So it’s no longer a matter of if, but when. Despite a miserable season, Ovechkin, at 38, is still the team’s most productive player with 37 points in 49 games played.
He’s also made NHL history
Moreover, with this goal, Ovechkin made history as only the third player to score in at least six games in a row after turning 38. The first to do so was Boston Bruins legend John Bucyk in the 1974/75 season and then cannon player Brett Hull, son of the legendary Bobby Hull, in the 2003/04 season, the latter boasting a seven-game streak.
The Russian goal scorer’s longest goal scoring streak itself is right from his rookie season in 2004/05. Back then he managed to score in seven consecutive games and scored a total of 8 goals. Even if he slows down rapidly in the following seasons, the Russian hockey player could really get ahead of Gretzky at the end of the 2025/26 season.
