A historic moment for Moravia and the entire Czech Republic. Early Sunday morning, the native of Hostěradice, South Moravia, became the welterweight champion of the UFC, the largest MMA organization in the world.
Jiří Procházka managed to defeat Glover Teixeira, the former champion, in an incredible battle. He became the first fighter ever to beat him on a submission.
He secured the title with less than 30 seconds left in the fifth and final round. Had it not been for the early stoppage, the Moravian fighter would have most likely lost, as after the fourth round, the judges saw two of the three judges score the Brazilian the win.
For our MMA scene, this is an achievement comparable to the victory of the national hockey team at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. That is why it was expected that Procházka would receive a very warm welcome on his return, which is exactly what happened.
In Brno he was greeted by several thousand people in the main square in the city centre, even though he arrived half an hour later than announced. Footage from the Moravian capital also made its way to the UFC’s social media.
And although Procházka was very self-deprecating after his win, he intends to enjoy the celebration of his title win, which he confirmed during his appearance in Brno.
