VIDEO: That was very unfortunate! Watch Stuttgart defender Mavropanos’ own goal

VfB Stuttgart played their German Cup (DFB Pokal) match on 31 January at Paderborn. The visitors won the match 2-1, but Konstantinos Mavropanos was unlucky at the start of the match when he scored an own goal in the third minute. Stuttgart then made up the deficit throughout the match.
A huge mistake or rather a run of bad luck? Probably the former. Greek defender Mavropanos opened the scoring in the third minute, but not in the goal he wanted.
He didn’t even look to see where the Stuttgart goalkeeper was in his half of the field and simply headed the ball into his own net. Expecting Florian Müller to process it and send it on.
But that’s not what happened, in fact quite the opposite. Müller was outside the box at the time of the pass and Mavropanos cleared the ball into his own net. You can watch the whole moment for yourself in the video below.
Stuttgart then had to make up the one-goal deficit throughout the match, with the score remaining unchanged at half-time.
Although the visitors clearly had the better of the play, it didn’t lead to a goal. Even in most of the second half.
It was only in the 86th minute that Stuttgart managed to equalise. Midfielder Gil Dias made a great run on a pass and handled it even better. He placed his shot into the bottom left corner of Jannik Huth’s net.
And in the 95th minute, Stuttgart turned the game in their favour when Serhou Guirassy headed home from a corner kick.
The Bundesliga side thus fulfilled their role as favourites and advanced to the quarter-finals of the German Cup. However, who their next opponent will be is currently in question.
