Nottingham Forest made it through Sunday’s play-off final against Huddersfield and were promoted back to the elite after 23 years.
Cooper’s charges will thus complement Fulham and Bournemouth, who avoided the play-offs by qualifying for the Premier League from the top two positions.
The fans not only after the final whistle, but throughout the final match, created a spectacular backdrop that also endured the parameters of the Premier League.
The Nottingham players were the better team in the match, with two very solid chances created by Ryan Yates in the first half, but they have not yet led to a goal.
The decisive goal came late in the first half when James Garner centred into the penalty area. This was then extended into his own net by Huddersfield defender Levi Colwill.
Nottingham continued to control the flow of the game and didn’t allow Huddersfield any serious chances. In the 73rd minute, Harry Toffolo tried to win a penalty, but fell in the penalty area.
However, he only earned a yellow card from the referee as there was no foul. Moreover, Paul Tierney confirmed the words of head referee John Moss after checking it through the VAR system.
Huddersfield FC would earn their second penalty 9 minutes later. However, Moss again dismissed any protests and did not award a penalty kick.
The last minutes of the final match did not bring any serious drama, so even after six minutes Nottingham were able to celebrate. It should be added, Huddersfield did not register a single shot on the opponent’s goal during the whole match.
Forest thus completed an amazing turnaround – after seven opening league games Nottingham players had only one point to their credit, and that was for the draw at Derby County.
However, in September Steve Cooper replaced Chris Hughton as head coach and since then Nottingham have begun their chase.
Forest have only appeared in the Championship play-offs twice since relegation from the Premier League. They finished third in the 2009/10 season and sixth the following season.
In 2010 they fell short in the play-offs to Blackpool, who were promoted to the elite after a successful final against Cardiff, and a year later they fell again in the opening play-off duels to Swansea, who like Blackpool were promoted to the Premier League a year back.
As we have already written above, Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham were promoted to the English top flight, while Norwich, Watford and Burnley were relegated to the second division.
