Slavia Prague went into the last game of the European Conference League with the expectation that they had to win and at the same time hope that Cluj would not score. However, after less than half an hour of play, a very controversial penalty kick was whistled against them, after which the Turkish team took the lead.
Slavia needed to win at home against Sivasspor. Without this result it would have been difficult to advance, although even that would not have been impossible. Everything depended on the second leg.
Cluj hosted Ballkani at home and if they won, Slavia’s fate would be sealed. However, the Sešiovans needed to focus on themselves and win to increase their chances.
However, the first half hour did not exactly favour them. In the 17th minute, Cluj took the lead against Kosovo after a goal by Nana Boateng and the Sešiv fans had to hope for a turnaround.
But in the 28th minute it was worse. And much worse. Slovenian referee Rade Obrenovic awarded a truly controversial penalty kick against Slavia.
He saw David Jurásek’s hand, but the ball ended up on his shoulder, so the penalty was wrongly awarded. There is no video in the Conference Europa League, so there was no correction.
Ivorian winger Max Gradel was on the penalty spot and sent Sivasspor into a 1: 0 lead. Slavia’s chances of making it to the spring season have thus dropped significantly.
