Tuesday night offered a clear one-man show by Erling Haaland. But his teammate Kevin De Bruyne also claimed the spotlight, closing out the debacle against Leipzig with an exhibition goal.
Manchester City only drew 1-1 in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final at Leipzig and had a lot to work on in the return leg. Pep Guardiola’s men went into the match as favourites and confirmed it right from the start.
In the first half Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick and the score was 3:0. The Citizens were clearly better, creating chances, combining well, but they didn’t allow Leipzig anything despite the initial high and active pressing.
Ilkay Gündogan started the second half with his goal after a good combination, followed by two more goals from Haaland. He put on a great one-man show, becoming only the third player in history to score five goals in a Champions League match.
In the 63rd minute, the Norwegian cannonballer went off the field, giving others the opportunity to step out of his shadow. Kevin De Bruyne also played a great game alongside him, and in fact he registered one assist just on Haaland’s goal when he hit the crossbar with a shot from outside the box and Haaland finished the ball into the net.
And the Belgian playmaker also claimed the spotlight at the end of the game, when he closed the match score to the final 7:0. Once again he was at the end of a good combination of Citizens and from outside the box he took a shot.
His shot went into the top right corner and the German goalkeeper stretched in vain. The goal came in the 91st minute and was the final nail in Leipzig’s coffin. They left Manchester with a good beating.
De Bruyne put in a great performance and shut the mouths of all his critics who blamed him for his lacklustre performances in recent weeks.
