Wednesday’s Champions League eight-final match between Tottenham and AC Milan produced a goalless draw, which was enough for the Italian side to progress to the next stage of the competition.
Spurs were unable to find a recipe for the Rossoneri’s defensive in the second leg, but they were able to confirm their progress by scoring several goals in the return leg.
Already in the first half Júnior Messias failed to score after a rehearsed standard situation, in the second act Brahim Díaz, Sandro Tonali or Divock Origi had big chances. However, none of the situations ended in goals.
Moreover, Antonio Conte’s charges made their own path to a potential equaliser more difficult after that wayward tackle by Cristian Romero on Theo Hernández.
And given that the 24-year-old Argentine already had one yellow card, namely for another foul on Tonali, he saw a red card from the head referee after that tackle.
Ironically, however, it was only with ten men that the home side created their biggest opportunity. However, Harry Kane’s header did not end up in the net. AC goalkeeper Mike Maignan made a bravura save to finally decide the Milanese’s progress.
Nevertheless, Tottenham will want to take part in the most prestigious club competition again next year, even though they still have a tough fight ahead of them in the Premier League. The London side is currently fourth in the English top flight with 45 points.
Three points back and with one game to spare, Liverpool are in form in recent games and are not going to let up. Spurs are four points behind third-placed Manchester United.
