Video: Salah will miss World Cup, fans in Senegal shine lasers in his eyes
On very unpleasant ground, the Egyptians had to fight for the world championship. In Senegal, all players and the goalkeeper were lasered in the eyes by the fans during the penalty shootout, and three players, including Mohamed Salah, failed.
On very unpleasant ground, the Egyptians had to fight for the world championship. In Senegal, all players and the goalkeeper were lasered in the eyes by the fans during the penalty shootout, and three players, including Mohamed Salah, failed.
The African barrage was played in the classic way, with a home-away double-header. Egypt started at home and won the first leg 1-0. But in the rematch, Senegal sent Boulaye Dia into the lead in the 3rd minute to tie the game.
Nothing happened for the rest of the match, no goal was scored in extra time and it came down to penalties. But the Senegalese fans’ lasers played a big role. They tried to stop the Egyptian players in a not-quite-fair-play way, and they succeeded.
But the Senegalese footballers missed at the start. Koulibaly and Ciss failed from the spot, Salah and Zizo missed for Egypt. The third penalty was converted by Sarr for Senegal and El Solia equalised for Egypt. Dieng put the hosts back in front, but Mostafa Mohamed missed. Sadio Mané took the decisive penalty to send Senegal to the World Cup.
But as we have already mentioned, the penalty was influenced by the behaviour of the Senegalese fans. Salah and co. had to deal with a laser in their eyes, as did the Egyptian goalkeeper. So, in very difficult conditions, the three Egyptians missed the penalty.
This is what Mané’s decisive penalty looked like, with a laser in the eyes of the Egyptian goalkeeper, of course.
