The misfortune and frustration of Chelsea in London knows no bounds. The arrival of Joao Félix was supposed to be a new hope and the fans promised an improvement in results. However, the first start in the new jersey ended in a fiasco as the Portuguese picked up a red card and Chelsea lost to Fulham.
It was a debut nobody could have imagined. João Félix had been struggling for a long time at Atlético Madrid under coach Diego Simeone and the guest appearance at Chelsea was a liberation for the Portuguese.
The player’s integration into the team was really quick and Félix was ready to jump into Thursday’s game against Fulham.
The 23-year-old Portuguese flew into his first game like a hurricane, being at everything essential and keeping the opposition defence busy.
But then came the first shock. After good individual work in the whitewash and a lucky run, former Blues midfielder Willian broke through.
But Felix continued his good performance and Chelsea levelled the scores just after the break when stopper Koulibaly pushed his way through. But 10 minutes later in the 57th minute, tragedy struck. The ball bounced off the Portuguese’s foot and he tried to win it back in a flash.
However, he very dangerously brought down a charging defender Tete while trying to win the ball and referee Coote did not hesitate to award Felix a straight red card.
This brought the Blues within ten and in the 73rd minute another shot came when Fulham striker Carlos Vinicius broke through and it was all over.
Fulham beat Chelsea after 17 long years in the Premier League and are sixth in the league table.
Chelsea are struggling a lot this season. They are only 10th in the Premier League and are already eight points behind in the European Cups. Under coach Potter, the coaching chair is seriously shaken and we will soon know if his dismissal will come.
So João Félix has not had a good start to English football at all, a straight red card could mean a stoppage for three or more games in a worse case scenario.
