Real Madrid had an unexpectedly difficult time against Shakhtar Donetsk, who were down 0:1 until the 90th minute. But then Antonio Rüdiger equalised in the last second of stoppage time after his header was knocked out by goalkeeper Antoly Trubin.
Carlo Ancelotti decided to rotate the line-up before this weekend’s El Clásico, and so Lucas Vázquez, Nacho, Antonio Rüdiger and Eden Hazard, who are not normally part of the starting line-up, came into the match, with Andriy Lunin still in goal when Courtois was injured.
The match was not very entertaining. The first half didn’t bring much excitement, with only praise for Shakhtar’s setup. Donetsk didn’t come to take the match against the Champions League winner and get as few goals as possible, but came to play evenly.
And it paid off, with Real Madrid players still with their heads in the booth after halftime, and right in the 46th minute Zubkov headed in at the back post after a center that Mendy had underestimated.
Real then took the reins of the game but could not get anything going for a long time. In the 87th minute, Vinícius could have equalised, but his header from just outside the box was headed over the bar
In the 92nd minute we saw a funny situation. Kroos got the ball in the opponents’ half, stopped it slightly and started waving at Rüdiger to run into the box. The burly stopper obeyed him, Kroos sent a fluffy centre on his head, Rüdiger’s finish ended up just wide of the post.
In the 95th minute, Kroos got the ball in roughly the same position. The difference this time was that Rüdiger was already waiting in the whitewash, so the German midfielder sent a precise ball to his head, the Real Madrid stopper climbed into the air and his header hit the bar and into the net.
But goalkeeper Trubin was also trying to get on the ball, but he didn’t have time and instead only brought down Rüdiger. They were both treated for several minutes, the German had a facial laceration and had to leave the field covered in blood. But he’s such a fighter that he wanted to get back on the pitch at the last seconds. Even coach Ancelotti laughed about it after the game.
Rüdiger sent a message from the plane to the fans afterwards, with his face bandaged, saying he was alive.
