Although only a very small portion of the tournaments in the 2024 calendar year are known, we may have already seen the best exchange of the entire year. It was Alex De Minaur and Grigor Dimitrov at the Rotterdam tournament in the Netherlands. The Australian was happier in the end.
Alex De Minaur can be satisfied with the start of the new season. At the United Cup at home he scored very valuable scalps of Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev.
He continues his great performances also in the indoor environment in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He passed the first two rounds without any major problems, defeating Sebastian Korda in two sets and also the experienced Belgian David Goffin.
In the quarter-finals he also took on Andrey Rublev. He avenged his defeat from this year’s Australian Open eight-finals, where the players spent more than four hours on the court.
In the semi-finals, on his 25th birthday, the current 11th player in the ATP rankings crashed into Grigor Dimitrov. Interestingly, he also faced the same opponent on the day exactly a year ago, when the Bulgarian tennis player was happy with the victory.
Now, however, the match went in De Minaur’s favour from the opening ball. In less than 90 minutes, the latter won after sets 6:4 and 6:3, never once losing his serve. On the other hand, he was successful on three returns.
In the sixth game of the second set, the fans witnessed an absolutely fantastic exchange, which can undoubtedly be one of the best exchanges of the year. In the end, the younger of the semi-finalists was the winner.
On Sunday, the Australian representative will play his first final of the current season. He will challenge the better of the Sinner – Griekspoor pair. Will he pull off similar stunts again?
