Charles Oliveira fights for the lightweight championship in two weeks. At UFC 280, he’ll take on Islam Makhachev under the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov. Many are once again underestimating the Brazilian, but let’s remember his last fight where he showed qualities worthy of a champion.

Charles Oliveira constantly underestimated

Many underestimate him and according to the bookmakers, he is again the favourite opponent. Charles Oliveira will once again take on “The Fate” and try to demolish all myths associated with his fighting history. Will he succeed?

When he entered his first defence of his lightweight title in December 2021, few believed him. Dustin Poirier, who had two wins over the legendary Conor McGregor, was the favorite as the challenger.

But in the third round, the referee stopped the fight early after a mounted choke on the Brazilian, and he once again showed the world his world-class jiu-jitsu. The date was May 7, 2022, when Oliveira defended his belt again at UFC 274, this time against slugger Justin Gaethje.

Even in his last fight, he faced adversity

Gaethje, like Poirier, shared a similar fate. Both had a title opportunity within their grasp, however, both fell short of the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov, who ended their dreams. Gaethje too was to have those skills that would be beyond the Brazilian fighter.

A spirited combination from the popular American wrestler sent the deposed champion to the cage floor again a minute into the fight. The bout thus had its clear favorite, but the bloody-faced Oliveira was the odds-on favorite that night.

The Brazilian fighter never lost faith in his abilities after landing hard shots and pushed forward constantly. He then caught his opponent at the end of the third minute and used his right back to give Gaethje a taste of his own medicine.

The difference with the American was that he took advantage of the moment in his own way and rushed in after the finish. He put his opponent in a choke, which Gaethje still broke out of, but the second attempt was already successful. The mad war between the two titans marks one of the most beautiful fights of the year.
