Newcastle United are in for a big night. After 20 long years, they return to the Champions League on Tuesday and will hear the world’s most famous football jingle again with their own ears. They face AC Milan at the kick-off and the fans will be thoroughly enjoying their trip to Italy.
A year and a half ago, wealthy owners came to Newcastle and few would have expected them to start shopping for the biggest stars immediately. The Magpies were linked with names like Neymar, Mbappé and Messi, but none of that happened.
The management gambled on a promising coach in Eddie Howe and yes, they strengthened the squad properly, but gradually, not in a crazy way. Within six months, Newcastle had easily pulled themselves out of the relegation zone and into a quiet mid-table position.
And the gradual path continued last season, when they reached fourth place and therefore the Champions League. It’s the first time in 20 years that they’ve qualified. Fate wasn’t too kind to them though, as it placed them in the group of death along with AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund and PSG.
The Magpies will open their regular Group F on Tuesday night at the iconic San Siro. So the Gordies flew to Milan on Monday to soak up the atmosphere properly.
Italy didn’t exactly welcome them, as it rained heavily for most of the day. But the Newcastle fans didn’t mind and had a great time.
They came out in front of the pub and a few of them took a belly slide down the street. The others cheered them on and happily filmed them.
But Newcastle didn’t enter the new season as well as they did last year. They did thrash Aston Villa 5-1 in the first round, but three defeats followed. It must be said, however, who they came up against: Manchester CIty, Liverpool and a superbly playing Brighton. The Magpies fixed their appetite at the weekend with a win over Brentford.
