In Prince’s Park, they must feel that they are living in a cycle that is constantly repeating itself. It’s spring again, PSG are out of the Champions League, the competition is being played out with absolutely no motivation, there are boos from the stands and the main stars want to leave. Just like last year and several times before.

After PSG were knocked out of the Champions League eight-finals last year at the hands of Real Madrid, Neymar and Lionel Messi took it down and were loudly booed by the stands.

And a similar thing is happening again this year. The Parisians crashed out in the Champions League eight-finals against Bayern after losses of 0:1 and 0:2, Lionel Messi was the only one of the star strike trio to play both games in the starting line-up but did nothing about the result.

Yet that is exactly why PSG brought him in, to help the club finally win the dream Champions League. Except that it turned into two fiascos in the eighth round. And the Parisian fans have had enough.

So before Sunday’s game against Rennes, when the line-ups were announced, PSG fans booed Messi a lot. But just seconds later, captain Kylian Mbappé was announced by the entire stadium.

PSG did not have a good game after that. Toko Ekambi scored just before the end of the first half, and three minutes after the change of sides, Rennes’ Kalimuendo added a second goal.

The visitors won 2-0 at the Parc des Princes and PSG are lucky to have virtually no opponents in Ligue 1. Messi and co. have already lost four times and drawn three times this season, but no other team is capable of sustaining results over the long term.

PSG’s departure for the cabins?

Messi was very angry after losing the game and didn’t even want to see the fans who booed him. And even though the whole team went to the stadium to applaud and thank them for their support, the Argentine was the only one to pack up and head straight to the dressing room.

He further fuelled speculation that he will end up in Paris in the summer. After all, his contract at PSG expires in June and he doesn’t seem to want to extend it.

There is talk of him either going to Saudi Arabia, where they are preparing for him the same luxurious salary and conditions that Cristiano Ronaldo boasts, or returning to Barcelona, which, however, has big financial problems.

A move to the MLS is also in the cards, helped by the fact that Messi said back in the Barcelona era that he would like to play in that competition. Attracted to Inter Miami by owner David Beckham, Messi would become a star in the USA and would make an incredible contribution to the attractiveness of local soccer.
