Liverpool won the battle with Newcastle at Anfield after a great conquest 4-2. Martin Dúbravka put in a good performance including a penalty, without him the Magpies might have got a ten. Anyway, Liverpool lead the league by three points ahead of Aston Villa.

Liverpool came out, as is tradition at home, very dominant. However, the Magpies withstood the pressure for the opening five minutes and threatened on the other end. But Anthony Gordon’s shot was knocked down for a corner by the defence.

The door to hell was held by Dúbravka

The Reds fired back in the 12th minute. First Martin Dúbravka intervened against Darwin Núñez, then Curtis Jones’ follow-up was knocked down by Fabian Schär. Six minutes later, Luis Díaz scored, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside by Núñez.

In the 20th minute Díaz was fouled in the penalty area and a penalty was whistled. Mohamed Salah took the ball, but Martin Dúbravka saved it.

The Reds’ pressure didn’t end there, however, as the Slovakian goalkeeper also picked out Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones shot over in a good position. There were early celebrations at the other end as well, Dan Burn’s shot was disallowed due to an offside by Alexander Isak.

The high tempo continued, almost from zero angle Trent Alexander Arnold sent the ball into the left post. Newcastle held on to a difficult first half and went into the box with a 0:0 scoreline.

Right after the change of sides Liverpool celebrated, the team action was finished by Salah into the empty net after a pass from Nunez.

Martin Dúbravka continued to keep the visitors in the game, making two more tough saves against Núñez until the 52nd minute. And two minutes later, Anfield fell silent. A quick Magpies move was finished off by Isak, with Alisson Becker having no chance.

A shootout in the final third for Liverpool

Dúbravka shone even as the end approached, when he could not reach Núñez’s header, the ball did not go into the net. In the 74th minute, the Reds were already in front, with Jones again clearing into an empty net. And four minutes later, it was all over. Cody Gakpo cleaned up a great centre by Shaythi Salah.

Sven Botman shot the visitors’ hopes away after a corner kick with a precise header. But then Diogo Jota was fouled by Dúbravka on the other side and the penalty kick was converted by Salah.

The home side held on for the final whistle. The Reds have a three-point lead at the top of the league after the 4:2 triumph, while Newcastle remain in ninth place.
