VIDEO: Perfect turnaround? With ten minutes to go, Barcelona were two goals down, but Xavi’s men still managed to take the three points
With ten minutes to go in the match against Celta Vigo, it looked like Barcelona players would suffer their first defeat of the new season. But Xavi’s charges performed an incredible turnaround and secured their provisional lead in the La Liga table.
Barcelona wanted to continue their winning streak, but Celta confirmed their reputation
That was an incredible turnaround! The magic from the famous Camp Nou going down has been transferred to the top of Montjuic. The Estádio Olimpico stadium watched Xavi’s charges suffer for 80 minutes. The crazy ending did put a smile on the faces of all the Blaugranas.
After a minor stumble in the first game of the league season, Barcelona got on a winning streak. In the last two games, they even gave their opponents a good beating. Last week, Betis players got a five-goal drubbing, then in midweek Barca inflicted the same goal ration on Belgium’s Antwerp.
The Blaugranas wanted to carry their great form into Saturday’s league game against Celta Vigo. However, the match certainly did not go the way coach Xavi, who signed a new contract with his employer during the week.
Celta confirmed during the match how unpleasant an opponent they can be for the Catalan club. As early as the 19th minute, Norwegian striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, 23, sent the visitors into the lead.
Celta players successfully limited the offensive power of their favoured opponent during the first half. The visitors continued to defend successfully after the change of sides. The shock for the home fans then came 14 minutes before the end of regulation time when Vigo’s Greek Douvikas increased the lead.
The Blaugranas were down by two goals, but made an amazing turnaround at the end of the game
But Barcelona’s players didn’t let up in their attacking activities and it paid off. A spark of hope was provided in the 81st minute by none other than Robert Leandowski. He took advantage of a beautiful pass from Felix and cut the gap to a single goal with a beautiful curve.
This, of course, got the blood pumping in the veins of the cheering fans and his teammates and the longed-for renewal was on. Just four minutes later, Lewandowski took advantage of a back pass from Joao Cancelo to level the match.
Just before the end of regulation time, Cancelo himself decided to take the three points. The Portuguese full-back showed an incredible run behind the Celta defence and made the most of youngster Gavi’s accurate centre.
Barcelona extended their winning streak to five league triumphs in a row and temporarily topped the La Liga table. It will thus be with anticipation that tomorrow’s battle for Madrid will be watched. At the Wanda Metropolitana stadium, Atlético will take on Real Madrid, who have not yet faltered in the new season.
