Thevideo of the announcement of the new reinforcements became a viral hit in the football community within hours and received millions of views within a day.

Football teams around the world are increasingly using the potential of social media to promote themselves. In the Czech Republic, for example, the Twitter account of Rokycany, which gained thousands of followers before the MOL Cup match against Slovan Liberec. But the latest internet hit is England’s Burnley FC, a team that was still playing in the Premier League last season.

England’s second highest league, the Championship, is rightly called one of the toughest competitions in Europe. A total of 24 teams are fighting for only three places among the English elite and the match load is not easy to handle.

This year is marked by the dominance of Burnley FC, led by former great central defender Vincent Kompany. With twenty-eight rounds currently played, Burnley are on course to return to the Premier League. The Clarets are now eighteen points clear of the relegation places and are starting to strengthen for next year.

But Burnley are not just winning on the pitch. The announcement of new signings has undoubtedly won the club new fans. Twenty-two-year-old centre forward Lyle Foster transfers from Belgian side Westerlo after signing a four-and-a-half-year contract. A sum of eleven million euros is going the other way.

However, the reason for the internet interest is not primarily due to the transfer itself, but the way it was announced. A truly unprecedented video landed on the club’s Twitter account.

In the minute and a half long video, the animated character Lord Farquaad from the popular Shrek movie wants to get a new face for Burnley FC. The team needs to score more goals and gets a trio of offensive players to choose from.

First Lionel Messi, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo and finally young Lyle Foster. Farquaad eventually rejects two quite possibly the best players in football history and opts for Foster, who is subsequently announced as the latest addition to the offensive line.

In less than twenty-four hours, the video has garnered over four million views. It is to be expected that similar ideas will start to increase in the future. Slovan Liberec, for example, played with the introduction of former Czech national player Theodor Gebre Selassie in the style of a rap video from the 1990s.
