Liverpool failed to win their opening game of the new Premier League season, drawing 2-2 at Fulham. Last season’s Championship star Alexandar Mitrovic scored twice.
Fulham entered the match very actively and produced a shot in the first minute, but Aleksandar Mitrovic missed the goal. Surprisingly, the home side controlled the game and when Liverpool came out and scored the opening goal, it was disallowed due to Andrew Robertson’s offside.
The new favourite was angry and in the 23rd minute Joao Palhinha got a hand to the ball on the edge of the box, the Reds defence had to block his attempt. Liverpool, of course, began to dominate the ball as time went on, but Fulham benefited from unnecessary turnovers.
In the 32nd minute, Harrison Reed’s goal attempt was still blocked, and a minute later Mitrovic split the net with a header. The crowd exploded.
On the other side, Luis Diaz could have equalized quickly, but he only hit the crossbar. The score at half-time was a surprising 1-0.
Fulham continued their hard-working performance after the change of sides and continued their fast breaks, in the 58th minute Neeskens Kebano shot from the edge of the box and hit the back post. At that point, substitute Darwin Núñez was already on the pitch and his moment came in the 64th minute.
Mohamed Salah found the Uruguayan striker with a precise pass and he used his heel to equalise with the help of a defender’s run. Four minutes later, Liverpool were almost in front, but Diaz’s shot was blocked.
The game continued to entertain, in the 71st minute Mitrovic fell in a scrum with Virgil van Dijk in the whitewash and the referee pointed to the spot. The ball was taken by the fouled man himself and a ground shot gave Fulham the lead back.
Liverpool had to work hard again and were very fortunate to equalise. From Nunez in the whitewash, the ball bounced to Salah, who already had an easy job.
Jordan Henderson hit the crossbar in the setup, but the Reds couldn’t manage any more and the game ended 2-2.
