Washington succumbed to New Jersey in front of their own fans. The Devils won 6:3 and leapfrogged their opponent in the Eastern Conference standins, moving them up to eighth place.
New Jersey won in a match full of goals
Washington was ahead of the Devils in the standings before the game, but the visitors entered the game as the favourite and confirmed that role. Moreover, they leapfrogged their opponent in the table after a 6:3 victory and moved up to the eighth place in the playoffs.
Neither of the Czech representatives appeared on the ice for New Jersey. Tomáš Nosek is injured for a long time, Ondřej Palát was injured before the game and Vítek Vaněček sat on the bench as a substitute goalie.
The Devils’ captain and the two-goal Canadians secured the victory
New Jersey took the lead at 3:30 when captain Nico Hischier was on the end of a combination. In addition to Colin Miller, goaltender Nico Daws also had an assist on the goal and it was the first NHL point for him.
The Devils captain increased his team’s lead when he crossed Luke Hughes’ shot on the power play. Before the end of the first period, the Capitals reduced the deficit when Connor McMichael also scored on the power play.
The two-goal lead was restored by Dawson Mercer in the second period. He was assisted by Hischier for his third point of the game. Washington didn’t let the Devils take a two-goal lead again, as Evgeny Kuznetsov scored at 31:25. With one minute and two seconds left in the second period, John Carlson tied the game at 3:3 with a hard shot from the blue line on the power play.
It looked like the third period would start with the game tied. However, Michael McLeod was against the goal, and first he made a great save and then he went for the puck and sent it between the goalie’s legs and into the net. Sixteen seconds before the buzzer, the Devils regained the lead.
The last period belonged to the visiting team, as the Capitals didn’t let anything happen. Both Mercer and McLeod added another successful shot behind the goalie to make it 6-3.
