VIDEO: Mertens entered the Goal of the Year poll with this super volley
Dries Mertens has always had tremendous quality. And he hasn’t lost it even after leaving Naples for Galatasaray. Against Zalgiris, he fired the process with this volley.

Galatasaray were huge favourites in the Champions League preliminaries. Neither did Ana, the Turkish champion’s squad is a fearsome one.
We find in it, for example, Dries Mertens, who for many years raged in Naples, Angelino, who played very solidly in Leipzig, the midfield is led by Nicolo Zaniolo, who played brilliantly in AS Roma, the attack is pulled by the goal scorer Mauro Icardi and to this the management brought Louis Zaha, who was one of the best wingers of the Premier League.
Galatasaray were huge favourites in the second round of the LM against Zalgiris. But once again, names on paper proved not to be everything and they stumbled a little.
In the first leg in Lithuania, the home side went ahead and although Galatasaray turned the score around within three minutes, Zalgiris equalised in the set-up to make it 2-2. Galatasaray were expected to produce a storming performance at home in Turkey to sweep the underdogs away, only that didn’t happen in the end either.
In the end, it was only a single goal that allowed the Turkish champions to advance to the third round of the Champions League. But it was really worth it.
In the 31st minute, Akturkoglu played a corner just outside the box, Mertens ran onto it and sent it into the net with a fantastic volley. It was the goal of the year.
Galatasaray have already taken the lead for the fifth time and are through to the third round. They will face Olimpija Ljubljana from Slovakia.
