VIDEO: Martinez own goal after Jorginho’s shot gave Arsenal the win

The opener of the 24th round of the Premier League was worth watching. The six-goal shootout between Aston Villa and Arsenal ultimately went in favour of the visitors. It was decided in stoppage time when Jorginho fired in a superb shot.

Aston Villa took the lead from the first big chance of the game. Matty Cash found Ollie Watkins, who ripped the net with his left foot.

Eddie Nketiah should have equalised in the 11th minute, but a great defensive save by Tyrone Mings at the last minute. Five minutes later the visitors were celebrating. Bukayo Saka headed the ball in from a volley, but Emiliano Martinez was unmarked.

Oleksandr Zinchenko’s long-range effort was the end of a good run for the Gunners, but the Argentine goalkeeper made the save. But in the 32nd minute, the home side were back in front. Philippe Coutinho finished the team’s action from the edge of the box.

After the change of sides, the Gunners were very active. Eddie Nketiah had the best chance in the 56th minute, but his header hit the crossbar. Five minutes later the favourite celebrated, again with a shot from a volley. His left-footed shot hit the bottom right corner of the net.

And a minute later, captain Martin Odegaard made a goal chance himself for Nketiah, but he shot over. At the other end, in a rare opportunity, John McGinn tried his luck, but only headed into the middle of the net.

Then Nketiah finally showed his positive side when he carved out a sure chance for Odegaard. But he didn’t take it. Leon Bailey could have made the difference for the home side, but he hit the crossbar.

In the 93rd minute, Jorginho got on the end of a cross and with a lucky bounce from Martinez, he struck the ball to make it 3-2.

Gabriel Martinelli added the equaliser in stoppage time to break Arsenal’s run of three games without a win. They lead the table by three points over Manchester City at least until the evening.
