Manchester United headed to Sheffield on Saturday night to take on the worst team in the Premier League. It was a much tougher game than expected for the Red Devils. However, in the end, they pulled it off to a victorious end.
Sheffield clearly had the better start to the game, outplaying Manchester United for the first half hour. However, it was the away side who managed to get on the board first.
After a pass from Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay scored his third goal in the last two games.
However, the Red Devils fans did not rejoice for long as the Scottish midfielder, who turned the game against Brentford around with two goals in three minutes, struck the ball in his own penalty area with his hand. Oliver McBurnie took the ball and sent it uncompromisingly into the net.
After that, Manchester United took the reins of the game completely, enjoying over 77% possession from then until half time. However, it didn’t lead to a goal, only Fernandes hitting the post.
After half time, the game looked similar to the end of the first half. However, Sheffield defended well and Manchester United were virtually only getting shots from distance. One of them could have been a goal, but Amrabat’s shot was also on target.
It was Diogo Dalot who managed to score, and he beat goalkeeper Wes Foderingham with a great shot to put his team back in the lead.
Sheffield could do practically nothing after that and the Red Devils managed to keep the closest possible result. But again, it was not a convincing performance. But the three points are very important, especially for Erik ten Hag who started to come under pressure.
After the Copenhagen game, however, Manchester United have a derby with Citizens and then Newcastle. Sheffield will visit the Emirates Stadium in the next round to face Arsenal.
